Capacity Professional Development Workshop for TIET Field Administrators of Primary Teachers’ Colleges (PTCs) and National Teachers’ Colleges (NTCs)

RELI (Regional Education Learning Initiative) in partnership with the Teacher/Tutor Instructor Education and Training Department of Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) organized a two-day (29th– 30th April 2019) Capacity Professional Development workshop for TIET Field Administrators of Primary Teachers’ Colleges (PTCs) and National Teachers’ Colleges (NTCs) at Royal Suites Hotel in Kampala. The workshop aimed at supporting them to adapt and adopt teaching methodologies that integrate the transference of life skills including High Order Thinking skills i.e. Critical thinking, Problem-solving, Communication, Teamwork, Positive attitude, Resilience, Self-awareness, etc. for improved learning outcomes. This was also in response to the concern expressed earlier on by the TIET department.

A total of 160 participants composed of Principals, Deputy Principals of National, Primary, and Health tutors’ colleges attended the workshop. Senior officials from the Ministry of Education and Sports participated in the workshop among others. These include:

  • Grace Baguma – Executive Director (NCDC)
  • Web Ndyabahika – Assistant Commissioner, Secondary Teacher Education (TIET)
  • Jonathan Kamwana – Assistant Commissioner, Primary Teacher Education (TIET)
  • Edward Ssebukyu – Commissioner, Private Schools and Institutions (PSI) and RELI Uganda
  • official representative on behalf of the Ministry of Education and Sports

Dr. Cleophus Mugenyi – Commissioner Teacher Education Standards (DES)

The Life Skills Thematic group composition: 7 organizations (Luigi Giussani Institute of Higher Education (LGIHE), Komo Learning Centres (KLC), Uwezo, Educate! Foundation for Inclusive Community Help (FICH), Africa Educational Trust (AET) and Fundi Bots. These organisations participated in the workshop on behalf of RELI. Three plenary sessions and four learning cafés were organized to enable participants experience practical sessions on how; to integrate and assess life skills in day-to-day teaching, and to facilitate learner-centred classes that empower learners to drive their learning process.
