Post Graduate Diploma in Education – Primary (PDEP)

Programme Description

The Post-Graduate Diploma in Education – Primary is structured around a competency-based educational framework, tailored to prepare aspiring educators for the dynamic demands of primary school teaching. This program equips candidates with foundational pedagogical expertise, fostering reflective and informed teaching practices. It emphasizes critical engagement with educational philosophies, ethical considerations, and innovative teaching methodologies. Participants will rigorously explore strategies for assessing learner needs, contemporary instructional techniques, and the integration of emerging educational technologies. By addressing both theoretical and practical dimensions, the program enhances trainees' ability to navigate modern classroom challenges while advancing their capacity to deliver impactful, student-centered education in primary school settings. Ultimately, it empowers educators to address evolving issues in primary education with confidence and creativity.

1.2 Target Group

This programme is intended for:

  1. Graduates from recognized universities holding an honours degree in a non-education field who wish to teach in primary schools.
  2. Individuals managing or working in primary education settings without formal teacher training.
  3. Professionals with a Master’s or PhD in a non-education discipline seeking pedagogical training.

1.3 Duration of the Programme

The Post-Graduate Diploma in Education – Primary shall be completed in a minimum period of one (1) year and a maximum of two (2) years. Luigi Giussani Institute of Higher Education (LGIHE) will implement a trimester system, consisting of three academic sessions per year. Each session runs for twelve (12) weeks, incorporating lectures, continuous assessment, and practicum. Though this model shortens each academic term by four weeks compared to the conventional semester system, it maintains equivalent instructional quality and learning outcomes. Examinations for each session will be administered in the first week of the subsequent session. For instance:

  1. After completing Session I, trainees will sit their end-of-session exams during the first week of Session II.
  2. Similarly, Session II examinations will take place in the first week of Session III.
  3. Session III will conclude with its examinations at the end of the academic year.

A three-week recess follows the completion of each session, allowing time for rest and preparation. The programme also includes two blocks of supervised school-based practicum, which take place during Session I and Session II, offering students valuable hands-on teaching experience in primary school settings. The academic calendar is structured as follows:

  1. Session I: August – December
  2. Session II: January – March
  3. Session III: April – July

This trimester approach provides a dynamic and flexible learning framework while ensuring that trainees receive a comprehensive and rigorous preparation for professional teaching at the primary level
